Homework Questions for Monday

Homework Questions for Monday:
1. Why does Madeline weep on opening her eyes?  Examine the lines carefully for your answer. (Stanza XXXIV)

2. What do you think Keats’ attitude is towards dreams and reality?

3. After Madeline and Porphyro’s physical union, why does the narrator direct the reader’s attention to the cold and wintry conditions outside?

Keats and the Imagination:
In a famous letter to Bailey in November 1817 Keats wrote:

“I am certain of nothing but of the Holiness of the Heart’s affections and the truth of the Imagination – What the imagination seizes as Beauty must be truth – whether it existed before or not...

Typical of Romanticism; power of the imagination championed over reality.
